Eaton Launches 12-speed Automated Manual Transmission, Delivering Improved Fuel Efficiency and Performance for China Market

Date: 2015/4/21

SHANGHAI … Power management company Eaton has introduced a new 12-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) for the China market designed to improve fuel economy, performance and ease of driving. The announcement came today at the 2015 Auto Shanghai Show.
The new 12-speed transmission features a range of product features, including an Electric Clutch Actuator (ECA), a unique automated clutch, industry leading electronic control software, and a rational gear arrangement. The combination of technologies provides up to 2 percent better fuel efficiency over a manual transmission while improving the overall driving experience for vehicle operators.
“Customizing products and solutions based on the industry’s megatrends and customer demand is an essential part of Eaton’s localization efforts,” said Krishnakumar Srinivasan, president, Eaton’s Vehicle Group, Asia Pacific. “At Eaton, we are committed to helping customers address the toughest power management challenges globally and locally, and this new transmission is ideal for fleets and independent operators looking for top-of-the-line performance with no sacrifice in fuel economy. It is designed to make every driver in the fleet your best driver.”
Other features of Eaton’s new 12-speed AMT include:
  • Lightweight aluminum alloy design for reduced weight;
  • Rational gear arrangement with small ratio steps to improve fuel efficiency;
  • Intelligent shift and skip shift functions for improved maneuverability;
  • Auto neutral function, which is engaged when the parking brake is activated;
  • Hill Start Aid, which prevents rolling while on steep grades, providing drivers with better control and confidence that their truck will not roll back or forward.
The new transmission offers multiple operating modes, including Manual mode for harsh road conditions and Low mode, which minimizes engine braking and wear on brakes for more efficient operation. The two-pedal design uses electronics to engage and disengage the clutch, which allows drivers to concentrate on the road and not on shifting. An electronic clutch actuator provides faster shifting, smoother engagement and improved low-speed maneuverability.
“This is a world-class transmission that helps deliver safe, confident and convenient operation for any driver through its optimized performance for a range of driving environments,” Srinivasan said. “Customers told us they wanted features that made their trucks easier to drive, and Eaton has engineered a transmission that will instill driver confidence while and maximizing their efficiency.”
Beginning in 2014, Eaton has carried out extensive reliability testing programs with OEM customers across a range of geographies and duty cycles. Fleet customers have expressed satisfaction with the product in areas such as durability, reliability and fleet efficiency.

“Reliability is key for us as our trucks need to run day in and day out,” said the owner of a local logistics company. “Eaton’s new 12-speed AMT in our fleet has been great for us. Our drivers love it, it has performed well, and we have been getting great fuel mileage.”
