Eaton Showcases 4-speed Automated Manual Electric Vehicle Transmission for Large Transit Bus Market

Date: 2015/4/21

SHANGHAI … Power management company Eaton is displaying a 4-speed Automated Manual Electric Vehicle Transmission for the large transit bus market that is designed to provide 10 to 15 percent energy savings through improved shifting. The technology is being shown at the 2015 Auto Shanghai Show.
The 4-speed demonstrator transmission features a more energy efficient gearbox when compared with a traditional direct drive transmission, but with no compromise in launch acceleration. By combing an AMT with an electric motor, Eaton is showing a transmission that would reduce overall powertrain mass and improve overall energy consumption. The product is in final validation testing with customer availability and pricing to be determined following the completion of OEM trials.
“As the China bus market continues to grow, Eaton is providing customers with multiple solutions through our proven hybrid system and now with an electric vehicle 4-speed automated transmission,” said Krishnakumar Srinivasan, president, Eaton’s Vehicle Group, Asia Pacific.  “At Eaton, we are committed to helping customers address their toughest power management challenges globally and locally, and this latest product puts us in position to offer a full range of transmissions to meet customer needs across multiple segments.”
Other features of Eaton’s concept 4-speed AMT for EV’s include:
  • Improved performance on grades up to 20 percent;
  • A motor and controller combination that is downsized by 50 percent for improved packaging and reduced weight;
  • Overall better vehicle performance through improved shift quality.
Eaton’s proven local engineering capabilities allow its engineers to work closely with customers on product development and complete system integration initiatives.  Large transit bus would be the target for initial applications with opportunities to grow in the medium bus segment.
