Eaton Presents 4-speed Electric Vehicle Automated Manual Transmission at Auto Shanghai 2017, Promoting the Transition of China Transit Buses

Date: 2017/4/20

Shanghai Power management company Eaton today announced a 4-speed Electric Vehicle Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) at the 17th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition (Auto Shanghai 2017). The innovative technology was independently developed in China and designed exclusively for the Chinese medium and large sized transit bus market, providing 10 percent to 15 percent energy savings through improved shifting.

The 4-speed demonstrator transmission features a more energy efficient gearbox when compared with a traditional direct drive powertrain without compromising launch acceleration. By combining an AMT with an electric motor, Eaton has created a transmission that will reduce overall powertrain mass and improve overall energy consumption. The product is in the final testing stage and is expected to have a limited release in the second half of 2017 in China.

“Eaton has always attached great importance to the China market, and as the China bus market continues to grow, Eaton is accelerating its strategic planning for the country and providing customers with multiple solutions through our proven hybrid system and now with an electric vehicle 4-speed Automated Manual transmission,” said Howard Liu, president, Hydraulics and Vehicle Group – Asia Pacific and Corporate China. “At Eaton, we are committed to helping customers address their toughest power management challenges globally and locally, and this latest product puts us in a position to offer a full range of transmissions to meet customer needs across multiple segments.”

Other features of Eaton’s 4-speed AMT include:

  • Improved performance on grades of up to 20 percent;
  • Aluminum housing for reduced weight;
  • Better overall vehicle performance through improved shift quality.

Eaton’s local engineering capabilities allow its engineers to work closely with customers on product development and complete system integration initiatives.
