Eaton’s thermal tech powers moonquake mission

NASA’s Farside seismic suite (FSS) mission will unlock new insights into the Moon’s far side, supported by Eaton’s advanced thermal management systems. Launching in 2026, the mission will deploy two of the most sensitive seismometers to study moonquakes and meteor impacts, recording seismic activity from a largely unexplored region. Arriving at Schrödinger basin through NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, FSS will rely on Eaton’s loop heat pipe technology for precise thermal control, making it the first mission to capture seismic data from the Moon’s far side since Apollo.

Eaton’s LHP: Critical for FSS’s lunar exploration

Eaton’s high-performance loop heat pipe (LHP) technology ensures the Farside seismic suite (FSS) operates reliably in the Moon’s extreme conditions. Engineered from stainless steel and propylene, the LHP manages up to 60 watts of thermal load at -40°C, maintaining optimal temperatures for FSS’s sensitive instruments throughout the harsh lunar day-night cycles. The FSS, equipped with solar-powered systems, will gather critical seismic data over a 4½-month mission, using the Very Broadband (VBB) seismometer and the Short Period (SP) sensor to study moonquakes and meteor impacts.
