Detect low voltage transformer hotspots before they become outages

Electrical hotspots in LV transformers often begin at joints, terminations, and connection points affected by heating, cooling, vibration, mechanical stress, loose connections, or increased resistance. These conditions can develop between inspection intervals and, if left undetected, may progress to failure.

This solution is specifically designed to provide continuous thermal monitoring protection for LV transformers via our Modbus transformer solution (MTS) which is provided in kit form per transformer (various kits are available depending on transformer size).

How Eaton Exertherm CTM monitors critical LV transformer connections

Sensor looms connects back to the MTS datacard (MTD), which collects and transmits the sensor temperature data, and activates alarms when a fault is detected. The MTD is housed in an external enclosure, along with the LEDs to provide local alarm status.

  1. Sensor loom continuously monitors both the voltage input and voltage output connections
  2. Sensor loom continuously monitors coil tap change connections
Continuous Thermal Monitoring Solutions for LV Transformers

Built for real-time LV transformer condition visibility

The low voltage transformer solution is suitable for both new build and retro-fit installation, and is also OEM vendor neutral.

Reduced reliance on periodic inspection

Move beyond snapshot-based inspection with continuous condition visibility between scheduled maintenance windows.

Simple kit-based installation

Use kit-form LV transformer sensors designed to make installation as straightforward as possible.

Retrofit and new-build suitability

Support both existing LV transformer upgrades and new installation requirements.

Earlier detection of developing hotspots

Identify rising temperature conditions before they progress into transformer outages, damage, or operational disruption.

OEM-neutral deployment

Apply continuous thermal monitoring across LV transformer assets regardless of manufacturer.

Continuous monitoring of critical transformer connections

Monitor key LV transformer connection points in real time, including voltage input and output connections and coil tap change connections.

Flexible alarm and data connectivity for LV transformer monitoring

The LV transformer (MTS) thermal condition monitoring solution can be connected in 2 ways.

  • LED on front of attached enclosure provides local visual condition status
  • Thermal alarms via relay and modbus to SCADA/BMS

Why choose Eaton Exertherm CTM for LV transformer thermal monitoring?

Our CTM solution is designed as an OEM-neutral solution to LV transformer monitoring, enabling continuous visibility across critical transformer connection points regardless of manufacturer. It monitors areas where electrical hotspots can develop, including voltage input and output connections and coil tap change connections, helping teams identify rising temperature conditions before they escalate into outages or equipment damage.

By providing real-time thermal insight between inspection intervals, the solution reduces reliance on periodic inspection alone. It also supports safer maintenance planning by limiting unnecessary interaction with energized transformer assets. Suitable for both retrofit and new-build LV transformer applications.

Where will you use CTM?

Thermal sensor technology helps electrical engineers, asset managers, and project teams build a more accurate picture of the condition of critical electrical infrastructure.
