Differential solutions for electric vehicles

As the market transitions to EVs, driver’s performance expectations will remain the same. We have a full range of limited slip and locking differentials which offer improved traction in adverse conditions, better stability while towing, and maximum off-road performance, regardless of the drivetrain. With decades of experience working with global automotive manufacturers integrating differentials into new vehicle platforms, we have the necessary capabilities to design and optimize our differentials for the unique torque requirements and efficient packaging requirements of electric vehicles.

A global leader in vehicle electrifcation

Eaton has more than 15 years of expertise in hybrid systems development and has supplied nearly half a million differentials for EV vehicles already on the road in the U.S., Europe and Asia-Pacific, including China. We also have high-voltage, fast-acting fuses in nearly 50 percent of electrified cars globally, and power electronics on a leading European battery-electric vehicle platform. We provide automatic locking differentials to a leading Chinese EV manufacturer and are developing limited slip and locking differentials for upcoming EVs.

We help you meet the unique design challenges of electric vehicles

Vehicle manufacturers face many unique challenges when developing an electrified vehicle, especially around optimizing efficiency, reducing weight, minimizing noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), and managing packaging constraints. Our decades of experience and extensive in-house capability to design, validate and manufacture high-precision, high-quality components can help manufacturers meet those challenges. As a global vehicle supplier, we are relied on for our extensive knowledge of vehicle dynamics and safety standards, and our experience managing high-voltage power distribution, circuit protection and advanced electric power quality systems.

We regularly partner with OEMs to design and develop differentials to their specific specifications and requirements, considering torque levels, duty cycles, fatigue and size requirements and more. EVs are no different: we help manufacturers design differentials for the unique torque loads and duty cycles found in EVs (EVs have torque load during coast situations that greatly increases required duty cycles), as well as the tighter packaging constraints EVs require to integrated into electrified drivetrains.

Beyond design, we have the capability to extensively test components at our more than 600 acres of testing facilities and tracks found at our Marshall Proving Grounds, which supports the needs of both our automotive and heavy-duty truck customers.

Differentials for electric vehicles

We offer a full range of technologies for electrified vehicles, including automatic limited-slip, automatic locking and electronic selectable locking differentials. Each differential is highly engineered, tested and validated for a variety of traction control applications.
